I wasnt sure what section to post this question. I didnt think it was a CONFIGURATION question, so I posted in in the General section.

There is a problem when using Ampersand & in the the title column of a book database. The MYSQL database handles the ampersands fine, but once they are there the PHPMYEDIT has problems with them when in the CHANGE/EDIT/DELETE pages.

They display fine in the DISPLAY page with the ampersand in the right place, but when I go to edit or delete that specific title, there is no edit boxes, nothing, just only the save, delete apply etc, buttons. Thats it.

I have to literally go to the MYPHPADMIN to delete the entry or remove the ampersand from the title there to then make it work on the edit/delete pages.

The reason I like to use the PHPMYEDIT is that the fact that I have other site moderators that need to update the book titles. But can NOT have access to MYPHPADMIN.

IS there a FIX for this? I searched the forum and website for it but nothing comes up?!

Thank you!

Justin

edit--- I noticed that a problem is also present when there is quotation marks or a back slash in the title. I get an error when in the edit or delete pages.

Hello again, I dont see alot of people viewing this message. I wonder if I posted this in the wrong section to getsome help?! if so, iI apologize, and if you could please move this to the proper place!

My problem is still there and present with more then just the AMERSNAD, BACK SLASH, Quotes, it also is effectd by Number sign and a bunch of others as well.

The problem is if these symbols are entered in the "TITLE" field/column of an entry, HIT SAVE, they pass to the list fine, but then i can NOT REedit the entry.. nor can i even delete it. It doesnt even show up in the edit or delete pages.

Now if i add any of these symbols to any other fields in the same entry OTHER THEN the "TITLE" field, hit APPLY CHANGES, then it seems to be ok to REedit or Delete!

I checked the field TYPES of them in comparsion to the "TITLE" field/column in the MYSQL and they are identical :

`booktitle` varchar(255) NOT NULL default '',
`bookrating` varchar(255) NOT NULL default '',

so I am wondering how come they allow me in the "book rating" column to use them symbols and NOT in the "booktitle" column ?! The only thing different was the PRIMARY KEY set to the TITLE. but i changed that too and it still wouldnt work right.

Can someone please help me with this?! I would really appreciate any help. Thank you!

Justin

-edited- I like to add that also in the main generated script.. they are also set idential too!

$opts['fdd']['booktitle'] = array(
'name' => 'Title',
'select' => 'T',
'maxlen' => 125,
'size' => 80,
'required' => true,
'sort' => true
);

$opts['fdd']['bookrating'] = array(
'name' => 'Title',
'select' => 'T',
'maxlen' => 125,
'size' => 80,
'required' => true,
'sort' => true
);

So there is no difference there that would explain why one allows them symbols and the other NOT?!

i could not understand the question.

is there ampersand in column name ?
is there ampersand in value of a field ?

(are you using cvs version?)

Yo... yes the problem iwht with MANY of the symbols not just with the Ampersands, it is also with the Numbersign, back slash, quotation marks, and some others.

It is when I enter data itself in the title column (not the name of the column.. the name of the columns are just (without the single quote marks): 'booktitle' 'bookauthor' 'bookrating' and 'date'

you can see in the above post in the arrays i use for the BOOK TITLE and the BOOK RATING that they are identical. and as far as the field types in the mysql databse itself are also idetical.

The only thing different is that the booktitle is set for the primary key cause i am NOT using ID WITH AUTO INCRIMENT as first column as the titles will be changed all the time, so i figured it would NOT need the auto incriment and title would bt ok!
also that the UNIQUE KEY in the code itself is set for the booktitle column.

NOW to answer yout other question i AM using the latest CVS version i just downloaded it a few days back to get the AUTO DATE to work right.. and that works fine.

The problem is when i ENTER a specific book title like "TOM & JERRY CARTOON ADVENTURES" in the title entry. It saves fine but then I can NOT redit it nor can I delete it.. as it brings a blank page with JUST the buttons.. I have to go in to the PHPMYADMIN control panel to literally DELETE the entry. This problem is also the same with the other symbols too (mentioned above) in the title column.

But if I enter any of the symbols in the 'bookrating' entry INSTEAD of the 'bookitle' entry without adding any of the symbols to the title entry.. i CAN REEDIT it AND DELETE it from the PHPMYADMIN generated code!

I am wondering why it allows me to use the symbols in the RATING entry but NOT in the TITLE entry?!

also i made a small minor typo mistake in the code pasted in my last post, here is the correction:

$opts['fdd']['booktitle'] = array(
'name' => 'Title',
'select' => 'T',
'maxlen' => 125,
'size' => 80,
'required' => true,
'sort' => true
);

$opts['fdd']['bookrating'] = array(
'name' => 'RATING',
'select' => 'T',
'maxlen' => 125,
'size' => 80,
'required' => true,
'sort' => true
);

As you can see they are identical the only difference is that the title is the unique key! maybe thats whats making it problems???

The original table in the database I set up for the books was set without an primary INDEX key, Well it was set for the BOOKTITLE field and thats not right.

According to the phpmyedit code, the primary key can only be a NUMERIC. So I had to make it an ID field. If it set to auto incriment then making the ID field advance by one each time an entry is made.

So allowing us to enter identical book titles as well, which I couldnt do before either, because the booktitle field was the primary key before and that wouldnt allow duplicate titles.

And being the booktitle was the primary key it was making it crash when I add the entrys with symbols in the booktitle field but not crash when I add them to the bookreview fields.

So I added a ID column and that is auto incrimenting. The phpmyedit code works better now. Now we can add all sorts of symbols in the title and it wont crash, and it allows us to edit and delete them as well!!

Everything is NOW working GOOD. Now that I am understanding what the ID column set for a primary key is used for in a MYSQL database! :O)
