phpMyEdit Features     PostgreSQL?

I've used phpMyEdit a bit for a MySQL based system but I'm now looking at the PostgreSQL database system as a potential alternative to MySQL for a number of reasons (i.e. better architecture, free for commercial redistribution unlike MySQL, etc.)

Can the developers indicate how hard it would be, in their opinion, to abstract phpMyEdit to work with other databases than MySQL?

Are other people interested in this?

Phil

rewriting pme code to work with other databases is definetly in the TODO list.

1. one problems is with patching class to not use mysql_* functions. namely myquery() connect() disconnect() as pme methods and mysql_fetch_array() _field_len() _affecter_rows() _free_result() used all arround the place.

2. second question is with sql queries, whether they will work in other databases. (LEFT OUTER JOIN, and some other)

3. third one is a more philosophical: support pme only on mysql or also on other databases. (more resources needed to check every database with every change).

I routinely have to work with both mySQL and postgreSQL... if phpMyEdit worked with both it would be a God-send.

Designing phpMyEdit to use an abstraction layer such as ADODB would solve many maintennance problems. It would also open the market to users of Oracle, Access, and many other DBs.

Regards,

Glenn

Any news on the cross db support ??

ADODB seems to be a good tool used in many projects and it seems to be very stable and it would be an excellent solution fo PHPMyEdit class.

Where could I learn more about the new features included in the next release of PHPMyEdit ??

I am new working with this class guys and it really rocks. I thought it would be more difficult to learn it but it is really easy to use and it is very powerfull.

Excellent work ...

No new news. Still many other useful things todo. If this come to implementation, we will most likely use PEAR:DB abstraction class.

That would be an excellent aproach too ... even better as it would be more open standard concept.

hope the new version will come soon ...

thanks for your response,

Alberto

Hello,
Because i need a version of PhpMyEdit for PostgreSQL ASAP, i try to hack it starting this evening.

At this point :
The database functions were translated.
DB connection works.
LIMIT n OFFSET n SQL error fixed.

The next goal is to create the same set of test tables on a MySQL and PostgreSQL DBMS and test one by one all the functions.

I hope you will share your results. I am interested in postgres too, more specifically enterpriseDB ( http://www.enterprisedb.com ) which is Postgress with an Oracle compatiblity layer.

Thanks for testing !

Hi,

I would also appreciate a PEAR DB aware version! Is there any development in that direction?
