I would like to be able to put a text field in
a column in the list mode where the value could
be edited directly.
I would also like to be able to make a "delete-
button" in a column (one for each row), that
would delete the line right away.
Any tips for how this could be achieved today?
How about implementing something similar for
tomorrow?

Direct delete support could be certainly achieved by some hack (I believe michal has something in the glove ;-) The question is if we should not add straight support for this into the core class.
Row edit is on the long-term TODO, but would be probably implemented earliest in the version 6.

the hack would be quite easy in the core class, replacing current delete text link with PME_sys_savedelete=Delete or rather $this->prefix['sys'].'savedelete='.$this->labels['Delete'].
however some javascript popup like 'sure?' would be nice...
