In 2017 (his third NFL season) Williams established himself as one of the NFL’s best right tackles, garnering All-Pro Second Team honors while somehow being snubbed from the Pro Bowl. His 2018 season began with hopes of becoming the league’s best right tackle to finish out his rookie contract which would then allow him to sign a long-term, big-money deal starting in 2019. But unfortunately for Daryl and for Panthers fans everywhere, his 2018 season consisted of just 56 snaps after suffering a season-ending injury in Week 1. Instead of the long-term deal he was hoping for before last season’s injury, Williams is coming back to the Panthers on a one-year, $6 million “prove-it” deal this year. Assuming he is fully recovered from his knee injury the question now becomes where the Panthers will use him. Much has changed since Williams’ Week 1 injury last year. First, Daryl’s injury allowed Taylor Moton to step in at right tackle and blossom in his second NFL season Cam Newton Color Rush Jersey , finishing 2018 as PFF’s No. 15 rated tackle. Second, the Panthers released left tackle Matt Kalil this offseason then traded up in the draft to land Greg Little at No. 37 to protect Cam Newton’s blind side. The Panthers now potentially have three starter-level tackles in Williams, Moton, and Little with just two spots to play them. Here are a couple of scenarios of how things could work out this season:Scenario 1: Moton to left tackle Taylor Moton could be moved to left tackle while rookie Greg Little learns his craft before being thrown into the fire, thus allowing Daryl Williams to start at right tackle. Remember, just because Little was solid in college and was a high draft pick there are no guarantees he is going to be good, especially as a Day 1 starter in one of the most difficult positions in football. Busts happen. Both ESPN and CBS Sports currently project this arrangement with Moton moving to LT in their way-too-early projected depth charts, but Marty Hurney is on record stating his preference is to keep Moton on the right side. Scenario 2: Williams to guardIf Little earns the starting left tackle spot and Moton stays put on the right side, Williams could potentially slide into the left guard spot, moving Greg Van Roten into a backup role. The Panthers website shows this as a potential scenario but how effective Daryl Williams would be at guard will need to be seen. Scenario 3: Williams as backup tackleIf Little and Moton earn the starting tackle jobs and Van Roten returns at left guard Michael Palardy Jersey , that leaves Williams as an expensive backup right tackle. This scenario is probably the least likely. My assumption is both Daryl and Marty Hurney agreed to a 2019 “prove it” deal so Williams could actually be on the field proving what he can do. As of today, my gut is leaning toward Scenario 1 with Moton starting at left tackle and Williams starting at right tackle. While there is reason to be optimistic about Greg Little, at this point he has proven nothing at the NFL level. Ron Rivera tends to trust veterans more than young guys and this may be especially true with the player responsible for protecting Cam Newton’s backside (and, by extension, Cam’s previously injured shoulder, knee, ankle, head, ribs, and vertebrae.) We shall see. The 2019 Pro Bowl rosters are out and the Panthers have two players participating in this year’s event. Linebacker Luke Kuechly and guard Trai Turner will represent Carolina at the Pro Bowl on January 27 in Orlando https://www.carolinapanthersfanshop.com/Sam-Mills-Jersey , FL.This is the sixth career Pro Bowl selection for Kuechly, the most in franchise history. Turner’s selection this year is his fourth consecutive invitation to the event.Panthers.com has more on Kuechly and Turner’s selection:Defensive tackle Kawann Short and running back Christian McCaffrey were named as alternates for the NFC. McCaffrey is considered a ‘snub’ since he has a chance to be the third player in NFL history to gain 1000 rushing and 1000 receiving yards in the same season (Roger Craig, 1985; Marshall Faulk, 1999). The starting running backs for the NFC are Ezekiel Elliott, Todd Gurley and Saquon Barkley, so there’s a chance that McCaffrey ends up playing in the Pro Bowl anyway since Elliott and Gurley will be on playoff teams. It would have been nice for him to be selected outright, though. You can check out the full Pro Bowl rosters for both conferences here.
