After the 49ers landed both Solomon Thomas and Reuben Foster with the third and 31st picks in the 2017 draft

, they boasted that they would have taken Foster with the third overall pick, if the Bears had taken Thomas after the two teams flip-flopped. Foster has since been released following a string of off-field issues, and G.M. John Lynch admitted to reporters on Monday that the 49ers have revised some of their pre-draft procedures based on their experiences with the former Alabama linebacker.“There’s certain tweaks we’ve made,” Lynch said. “Our 30 [per team] visits this year, we brought people more in a group setting. We want to see how they interact with other people. So those are subtle things that we do. But there’s so much that just goes into the research of these players. You learn something every year. I think the most important thing, you impart upon your scouts, upon your staff is

, ‘We have to be as thorough as humanly possible.’ Anything we can learn about these guys is valuable information. I’m real proud of the work we’ve done with our staff to get as much information to be equipped to make as good a decision as possible.”Lynch acknowledges that the 49ers learned a lesson from drafting Foster.“If you aren’t always learning, shame on you, shame on us,” Lynch said. “I think with Reuben, I think we somewhat accounted for it by where we drafted him. I think we had him at a certain value. We didn’t draft him there. That doesn’t excuse us. It’s a shame. We’re very happy to have Kwon Alexander, but that came at a heavy price. We would’ve much preferred to have Reuben still playing here. So of course you learn a lesson. If you don’t, like I said

, shame on you. You work hard to try to identify what is the lesson that you learned. We know in-house what those lessons are.”It sounds as if one of the lessons was to put prospects among other prospects, in order to assess whether they will be able to work and play well with others. Foster clearly wasn’t (as evidenced by the fact that he sent home from the Scouting Combine), and that’s why he’s now working and playing in Washington. With Robbie Gould’s status now iffy, maybe we should start discussing who to bring in." 49ers free agency 201949ers have some options to replace GouldNew,91commentsWith Robbie Gould’s status now iffy, maybe we should start discussing who to bring in. Turns out

, even Gould doesn’t know what the future will hold. It’s not a bad idea to look at a future without Gould. So the 49ers may need to get a backup plan. They already have Jon Brown but going into the season with one kicker that hasn’t kicked a single field goal at the professional level is a bit foolish. Even if Brown is the man to kick field goals in 2019, the 49ers would be wise to get a veteran in there to compete. Luckily, there are a few kickers available. The first one is Phil Dawson, Gould’s predecessor. Dawson’s numbers took a bit of a hit since leaving San Francisco. He made 80 percent of his field goals in 2017 (meh) and62.5 percent in 2018 (yikes!). His awful percentage in 2018 came from missing two field goals in the 40-49 yard range and missing his sole attempt from 50+ yards. Dawson played in just 10 games in 2018 as well before going on IR, which hurts his percentage. Any way you look at it, that 2018 is bad, nearing the levels of David Akers in his last season with the 49ers. The injury could be to blame

, and Dawson was very dependable in San Francisco. The other one to think of is Matt Bryant. Bryant was released by the Atlanta Falcons and has yet to get picked up by another team. He’s been very reliable as a kicker, but there’s one problem: he kicked in a dome for a decade. So if he can do it in the windy weather of Levi’s Stadium, it’s a good replacement for Gould. A training camp battle would be just the way to figure this out but Bryant is not going to come cheap. Unlike Dawson, Bryant was effective in 2018, making 95.2 percent of his attempts. His lone miss came in the 50+ yards category. Those are the top of the kicker hierarchy. From there you have names like Cody Parkey, or maybe the 49ers can convince Sebastian Janikowski to come out of retirement. The point is they have options. Options they will need to start looking at sooner rather than later.
