One area where this game excels is in how these elements are implemented. Your games are played on the DS's top screen. The television is empty when you aren't watching or playing one (

). You and Arino are seen as children sitting in his living room on the bottom screen. Arino may be shown on one screen while you can browse a handbook or magazine on the other at any time. Then, with a swift push of the L and X keys, your game is back in front of you.
The ability to go to a page of a magazine or handbook and keep it open to that page as you play is one of the features that makes this feature so awesome. In a time when the Internet has rendered such a thing unnecessary, I believe it is as accurate a portrayal of the games I played as a youngster and the supplemental resources I used to play them better as is possible.
In his own way, Arino is pretty entertaining. He will converse with you about games he enjoys playing or what his schoolmates are up to in between tasks. He encourages you throughout contests. He becomes ecstatic when you beat foes, chastises you for missing power-ups, and becomes angry when you repeatedly struggle to finish a level. He immediately steps into the shoes of that childhood buddy who we used to play games with when we didn't know what constituted a "good" game.
