Reading

aloud to babies can help to strengthen the emotional bonds between them and their parents. "Reading to your newborn is a one-on-one activity that you can really turn into a special time with your baby," says Mary Ann Abrams, M.D. of Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. "It exposes the baby to the sound of your voice, which [them] finds soothing."
In fact, a recent study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health discovered that reading books helped preterm infants in the NICU and their parents "cope with a difficult experience, reinstating their role as primary caregiver."
Children who were read to as newborns have a larger vocabulary and more advanced mathematical skills than other children their age, according to research. Consider a study published in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics in 2019. It discovered that when caregivers read one picture book to their infants every day, they expose them to approximately 78,000 words per year. Researchers estimate that "children from literacy-rich homes hear 1.4 million more words during storybook reading than children who are never read to" in the five years before kindergarten begins.
